Without a doubt, Ciro Marchetti is one of my favourite Tarot Deck artists! I own 3 of his decks, including this, the Gilded Tarot, along with the self published Tarot of Dreams (all time favourite deck) and the Legacy of the Divine Tarot (another fave). This is a review of the Gilded Tarot, which I have owned for a while now.
I have to say I LOVE these cards (can you tell?). The images are lovely to look at, and in terms of tarot, they ‘read’ extraordinarily well. They just seem to capture the meaning of each card.
This is the mass produced version published by Llewellyn so I was expecting the card quality to be as it is – they are quite thin (but shuffle really well) and there is an unpleasant smell that I was eventually able to get rid of without any special treatment (I suspect just from overuse 😉 ) – lots of fresh out the pack decks have a ‘new’ smell, some are quite nice, this one isn’t, some of the printing is a bit pixellated but overall I’m happy with the look of these cards – for the price I paid at amazon it’s what I expected.
For beginners this is an ideal deck! The images pop off the page, and there are lots of clues in the cards for meaning, helped along by characters and scenes – if you’re a first timer, definitely consider buying these as opposed to a more traditional deck based on numerical images. These cards are also featured in the Easy Tarot book and deck set, which is a great jumping off point for an aspiring tarot reader.
I also do not use reversals with these cards – I find they convey their meaning sufficiently with upright values.
On a side note: seriously considering taking the plunge and buying ‘The Gilded Royale’ deck which is limited edition, slightly modified deck self published by Ciro Marchetti – have a feeling the card stock will be of a higher quality though I have read they are a little more difficult to shuffle – I imagine they are similar to the Tarot of Dreams, which has gilded edges and a much thicker card stock, as well as being noticeably larger than this standard deck.
So overall I give this deck 4.5/5 – the mass produced quality and smell just knocking off that .5 of a point. Still worth every penny! You can buy using the link below 🙂
